Garth Brooks: Country star accused of rape

In May 2019, the accuser alleged that Mr Brooks asked her to travel with him on his private jet to a Grammy awards ceremony in Los Angeles.

When they arrived at the hotel, Mr. Brooks had only booked a one-bedroom suite that they could both share, according to the lawsuit.

Her lawsuit alleges that as soon as Mr. Brooks entered the hotel suite, he appeared naked in the bedroom doorway before raping her.

She said Mr. Brooks also made sexual advances on other occasions after the alleged attack, forcing her to place her hands on his genitals and share his fantasies, the lawsuit says.

The lawsuit also alleges that Mr. Brooks suggested to Jane Roe that he have a threesome with his wife, fellow country star Trisha Yearwood. The BBC has contacted Ms Yearwood for comment.

In his statement to the BBC, Mr Brooks said: “Over the last two months I have been endlessly plagued with threats, lies and tragic stories about what my future would be if I did not write a check for many millions.” It was, like a loaded gun was being shoved in my face.

“Hush money, no matter how much or how little, is still hush money. For me, that means admitting to behavior that I am incapable of – ugly actions that no human being should do to another.”

He added: “I want to play music tonight. I would like to continue our good deeds in the future. It breaks my heart that these wonderful things are now being called into question. I trust the system, I’m not afraid of the truth, and I’m not the man they portrayed me as.

The legal battle over the matter began three weeks ago with an anonymous lawsuit filed in federal court in Mississippi by someone described as “a celebrity and public figure living in Tennessee.” That was Mr. Brooks.

Mr. Brooks said Jane Roe made the allegation after he rejected her requests for employment and medical benefits.

His preliminary legal action firmly denied her allegations, calling them “vile and untrue.”

Mr. Brooks’ lawsuit also said the allegations were a threat intended to cause “significant, irreparable harm” to his reputation, family and career.

On Thursday, Jane Roe’s lawyers filed their 27-page lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court.

In addition to sexual assault and battery, her lawsuit accuses Mr. Brooks of repeatedly exposing himself, making sexually explicit comments and sending inappropriate text messages.

Garth Brooks is a household name known far beyond the country music genre.

Jane Roe’s lawsuit says he is a two-time Grammy winner who has sold more than 162 million albums and is worth about $400 million (£305 million).

He is known for his philanthropic work, particularly supporting organizations that benefit children and provide local relief after natural disasters.
