Jesse Winker and Willy Adames exchange words in Wild Card Game 1

Jesse Winker returned to the ballpark where he spent this 2023 season, but it wasn’t a warm homecoming welcome for the New York Mets outfielder.

Winker was booed by Milwaukee Brewers fans during Game 1 of the National League wild-card series Tuesday night at American Family Field, but got his revenge — and some extracurricular activities, too.

Winker delivered the first hit of the game in the Mets’ 8-4 victory with a two-run triple to start the second inning off starting pitcher Freddy Peralta.

Winker, who hit just .199/.320/.247 in 61 games with the Brewers last season, only had one hit for more than a double during his entire tenure with Milwaukee.

The former Brewer also got into an exchange of words with ex-teammate Willy Adames.

As Winker rounded second base, he seemed to say something that surprised Adames a little. As he reached third base, Winker shouted exuberantly toward his own dugout. Then, after turning back to the field, Winker looked a member of the Brewers, apparently Adames, in the eyes and began yelling at him.

Adames had some words of his own to respond.

“I don’t know what was going through his mind, but he just started saying some things and I just said something back,” Adames said. “I think that’s the type of player he is. It is what it is.”

“Surprising, it was surprising that he said some things. Like I said, I think it’s part of his personality. It was just a little surprise for me, but we won’t back down.”

Popular MLB content creator Jomboy broke down what he thought players were saying and warned in advance about foul language:

“If you think I can run and talk, you don’t know my athletic ability,” Winker told Mets reporters after the game. “That doesn’t work.”

What was said?

“Nothing,” answered Winker. “I don’t really want to talk about it. I just want to concentrate on the game tomorrow.”

Winker’s time with the Brewers was somewhat turbulent. When he moved from Seattle to Milwaukee, there had been concerns about his clubhouse presence since his time with the Mariners, but these largely subsided during his time with the Brewers. But Winker was unable to play despite numerous opportunities and then, after remaining on the injured list for an extended period of time, was added to the postseason roster for the Wild Card Series. He scored twice, once in each of the Brewers’ losses, and got out both times. He was also booed by the crowd on both occasions.

The reception doesn’t get any warmer for Winker in Milwaukee. But given the outcome of Tuesday’s game, he’s probably fine with that.
