Alonso was able to calm critics in the series finale

Thursday night’s series finale could also be the finale for Pete Alonso in a Met uniform.

The soon-to-be free agent has hit 226 home runs in the blue and orange, including 34 this year, and he will have suitors who may offer him more money than New York. The fan base seems to be divided on whether they want to see Alonso again. While home runs total were the third-most in franchise history, his OPS this season was .788 – a career-low 39 points.

Among runners in scoring this year, he slashed .232/.330/.417, leading some to question his ability to hit in the clutch. He didn’t silence his critics in Game 2’s Wild Card loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.

Alonso grounded out on an inning-ending double play in the first inning with runners in the first and third innings. He probably would have been out anyway, but he embarrassingly tripped over his own bat while running first. He struck out to end the fifth inning with Brandon Nimmo on the second. He finished the game 1:4.

Mets fans may be worried, but Alonso keeps the faith and the manager Carlos Mendoza is confident his 29-year-old first baseman will pull through.

“I feel good,” Alonso said after Game 2. “Yes. I mean, I feel like I have pretty good hitting techniques. Yes. I feel really consistent. You just have to keep going and good things will happen. Keep swinging at good pitches and good things will happen.”

“I mean, look,” Mendoza said. “When you’re facing a quality pitching staff, it’s not going to be easy to hit balls out of the ballpark. And we did a good job of going the other way, taking what the game gave us and putting the ball in play. We didn’t do that today. Pete, he’s a power hitter, you know, and he’s one hit away from hitting a big hit. He has another chance tomorrow and will step up.”

If he does move up, the Mets will go to Philadelphia, where he can hopefully help delay his potential finale again.
