Tracking two systems in the tropics

After Hurricane Helene severely devastated many communities in the southeastern United States, we are now tracking not one, but two newly named tropical systems in the Atlantic Ocean.

The first is Hurricane Kirk and here is the latest report from Thursday at 5 p.m.:

Recent computer models show no impact of this system on the United States. Instead, the forecast direction keeps the storm out of the open Atlantic throughout the weekend. The storm will remain a major hurricane through the weekend and will eventually weaken early next week.

Our second naming system, Tropical Storm Leslie, lies directly east of Hurricane Kirk. Here are the latest warnings for this storm:

While Leslie is still far out at sea and closer to Africa than the Caribbean, the planned path is northwest toward the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The storm is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane early next week.

Our Met Office team will now monitor both systems through the weekend.

Please check back for regular updates on this story.

Have a good start into the weekend!
