Ferencvaros 1-2 Tottenham: Brennan Johnson remains in top form as Spurs claim their second Europa League win | Football News

Brennan Johnson scored his fifth goal in five games as Tottenham won 2-1 at Hungarian club Ferencvaros to secure their second Europa League win.

Johnson came on as a second-half substitute and continued his torrid winning streak despite Spurs’ recent triumph in Europe, with a much-changed side since the 3-0 win at Manchester United, which featured young players Mikey Moore and Will Lankshear for the first time Being in the starting line-up wasn’t easy.

Pape Sarr gave Ange Postecoglou’s young team the lead against the run of play in the 23rd minute with a close-range finish that came in handy after two rebounds in the penalty area. The hosts saw Barnabas Varga’s header disallowed for a narrow offside position and forced Guglielmo Vicario into a spectacular response.

Pedro Porro hit the foot of the left post before halftime and in the second half, 19-year-old striker Lankshear volleyed a corner just inches over. Timo Werner continued Spurs’ profligacy in front of goal, hitting the side netting after attempting to get around the goalkeeper.

However, Johnson injected quality and confidence into the final third. His powerful first shot, aimed at the top left corner, hit the crossbar and a few moments later he shot into the goal from the left post four minutes before the end of the game.

To their credit, the hosts kept Spurs under pressure until the end, with Varga eventually scoring and beating Vicario with a clever finish from a low cross in the 90th minute.

Ange welcomes the youth to the European victory

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou said:

“We’ve made a number of changes to the squad, including the new additions, but I think they’ve handled it really well.”

“We defended well, played good football, created some good chances, perhaps could have had a few more and, above all, won a European away game, which is thanks to the boys.”

About Mikey Moore: “He was outstanding. For a 17-year-old who played 90 minutes in a European away game, he handled it brilliantly – I knew he would do that. It will help him in his development. I didn’t feel like I had to take him.” He still looked strong at the end and still contributed.

Opta statistics: Johnson is enjoying his best form

  • Tottenham have won five consecutive games in all competitions for the first time since March 2021 under Jose Mourinho.
  • This is only the second time in 11 attempts that an English club has recorded an away win against Ferencvárosi TC (D4 L5), with Leeds United also beating the Hungarian side 3-0 in the European Cup in November 1969.
  • Tottenham midfielder Pape Sarr has been involved in a goal in each of his last three games in all competitions for the north Londoners (2 goals, 1 assist), following a run of 17 without being involved in a goal.
  • Brennan Johnson has scored in each of his last five games for Tottenham in all competitions, scoring a total of five goals in that time, as many as he has scored in his previous 38 games for the club.
