WORCESTER, MASS. (WHDH) – Authorities closed a portion of I-190 in Worcester Wednesday afternoon after police received reports of a man with a gun near the highway, a State Police spokesman said.

Trooper Brandon Doherty said in a statement that state police officers and Worcester police officers responded near the Ararat Street overpass over I-190 around 3:40 p.m

At 4:10 p.m., Doherty said the scene was secured and a man was in custody.

Police officers were seen working as traffic backed up on the north and south sides of the highway.

At one point, a 7NEWS camera spotted officers walking side by side along I-190, seemingly searching for evidence.

SKY7-HD discovered emergency services still on site around 4:45 p.m. The police had stretched barrier tape across the entire width of the motorway.

There were several signs on the highway around 5 p.m.

At one point, police officers directed drivers to use a highway ramp to get out of the traffic jam.

Further information was not initially available.

While police rushed to I-190, a Worcester police spokesman said investigators were also on scene Wednesday investigating a shooting on nearby Heroult Road. The shooting happened around 2:15 p.m. One person was taken to a hospital.

Police said it was “unclear” whether the shooting on Heroult Road was related to a report of a person with a gun near I-190.
