A water main break in Kingsport leads to outages and boil water warnings

A water main break in Kingsport has led to outages and a boil water warning.

The boil water advisory applies to the area bounded primarily by Stone Drive, Interstate 81 and the John B. Dennis Highway, as well as the Cooks Valley, Indian Springs and Fall Creek neighborhoods.

The failure map is attached to this article.

Here is the full press release:

Due to a water main break at the city’s water filtration plant early Wednesday morning, a large portion of Kingsport’s water customers may have experienced a loss of water service.

Affected Kingsport water customers were in an area bounded primarily by Stone Drive, Interstate 81 and John B. Dennis Highway, as well as the Cooks Valley, Indian Springs and Fall Creek neighborhoods. Please see the attached map showing affected areas.

Crews have repaired the waterline and are currently working to restore service. Service is expected to be restored to all people in the affected area on Wednesday afternoon.

Kingsport officials communicated with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) during this event. Out of an abundance of caution, TDEC officials have determined that a public announcement of a boil water warning is necessary for affected customers.

Customers outside the affected areas are not subject to the boil water advisory.

A boil water advisory means that water customers should not drink the water without boiling it first.

Bring water to a boil, let it boil for three minutes and allow it to cool before using. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. For the time being, boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and preparing food. Boiling water is not necessary for laundry, bathing or dishwashing.

Once system pressure is restored, bacteriological testing will be performed throughout the system. Customers will be informed when tests show there are no bacteria present and the water no longer needs to be boiled. We will provide an update on Thursday afternoon once test results are available.

Please pass this information on to anyone in your area who may drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly.
