Kate McKinnon on the new book she started writing before SNL

Kate McKinnon is not just one Saturday Night Live Legend and a bona fide movie star, she is now an author with the publication of her first book. The Millicent Quibb School of Etiquette for Young Ladies of Mad Science.

“I started when I was about 26 and was hired (on SNL) when I was 28, so… I worked on it for 12 years,” she told Fallon during their Sept. 30 meeting Tonight’s show Look.

McKinnon told Fallon this Millicent Quibb is about three “goofy” girls who “get kicked out of etiquette school and receive a mysterious invitation to another etiquette school – run by the infamous brain-pickling mad scientist Millicent Quibb, who has really crazy hair, and puts them on another school takes adventure.”

Not only is the book full of high-octane capers, but it’s also full of “really fun art and diagrams,” as McKinnon loves manuals and diagrams. She told Fallon she was “obsessed with 19th century botanical prints.”

“I would tell people, ‘I’m writing a middle grade novel,’ and they would say, ‘Don’t sell yourself short.’ But that’s the name of the genre,” she continued.

“So it’s for middle school and it’s my favorite genre because it’s the age when kids start to really think about who they are and how they can live a good life and what they’re going to do in the world “Magic,” added McKinnon added, “and it’s just so much fun and I love it.”

When McKinnon came over TODAY On September 30, she revealed to Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie that she had actually written the first chapter of the book 500 times.

“I counted on my computer, I have 500 drafts of the first chapter. Looking back, I should have written first and then gone back, but I learned how to write in all the 12 years I was there.” SNL” she continued TODAY.
