Trump ally says he has seen no evidence that Haitian migrants have eaten pets

WASHINGTON — Staunch Trump ally and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy said he has seen no evidence that Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio, ate cats and dogs — a debunked claim made by former President Donald Trump during the presidential debate this month was put forward.

“When I went to Springfield, I didn’t see that evidence,” Ramaswamy said on CNN Tuesday, adding that “there are residents of the community who have pointed it out.”

Ramaswamy’s latest comments came after he held a town hall meeting in Springfield on September 19 and sidestepped questions from reporters about Trump’s claim.

“I am not here to talk about the issues that the media loves to dwell on,” Ramaswamy said during the event. “Cats and dogs, we don’t talk about it. We’re talking about people who are impacted in this community.”

Ramaswamy dropped out of the presidential race in January and endorsed Trump. He has embraced baseless conspiracy theories, including that the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 was an inside job.

Numerous political leaders have pushed back against Trump’s claim, including Republican Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, who called the claim “garbage” and said there was no evidence to support the claim.

Vice President Kamala Harris said in an interview with the National Association of Black Journalists in Philadelphia last week that her heart breaks for the Haitian community.
