Former Conservative MP seeks compromise in tax evasion trial

(Yannis Liakos/Intimate News)

Former New Democracy lawmaker Andreas Patsis is seeking a compromise in a trial in which he was accused, along with his former and current wife, of false declarations of assets from 2019 to 2022 and his involvement in a foreign company.

The request for a hearing with the authorities was submitted by the defendants’ lawyers to the Court of Criminal Appeals.

The court adjourned the proceedings and an initial conversation between the lawyers and the public prosecutor took place behind closed doors. The court reconvened and the prosecutor announced that he was “initially open to compromise.” The court adjourned the session until October 1 to decide whether the trial process can be completed or whether the trial will continue as before.

If the hearing is successful, the court president announces the amount of the penalty, which may not be higher than the amount agreed at the hearing.

The charges against Patsis were brought by a prosecutor in March 2023 after his immunity was lifted by Parliament.

When the scandal came to light, the former Grevena MP was expelled from the ruling New Democracy faction.
