Boil water notices in several communities throughout coastal Georgia

Various private water utilities have issued boil water advisories for several communities across the state, including customers in the Coastal Health District.

It is the responsibility of each water utility to notify customers of a boil water advisory and to inform them when the advisory has been lifted. The Coastal Health District has posted a list of known boil water advisories at the bottom of this website. However, customers with questions about specific water systems should contact their water utility company.

When water systems lose pressure during a power outage, there is a risk of water contamination. Once power is restored, the water company must test the water before it is safe to use again for customers.

If your community has a boil water advisory, you are advised to either use bottled water or boil all tap water before using it for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, or preparing baby food.

How to boil water correctly:

  • Fill a pot with water.
  • Heat the water until bubbles rise from the bottom of the pot.
  • Once the water comes to a rolling boil, let it boil for at least 1 minute.
  • Turn off the heat source and allow the water to cool.
  • Pour the water into a clean container with a lid for storage.

Residents with flooded private wells are also advised to boil water for consumption. Your well is considered flooded if your well casing was submerged in water at any time during or after the effects of Hurricane Helene.

Residents should boil their water until they are notified by their drinking water provider that the water system is fully functional again and the water is safe to drink.
