Spike Lee and Kelsey Plum trade trash talk during the Liberty Aces playoff game

Spike Lee and Kelsey Plum had some good old trash talk in the middle of Game 1 of the WNBA semifinals between the New York Liberty and Las Vegas Aces.

On Sunday, the Aces visited the Liberty at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York for their best-of-five second-round playoff battle, and die-hard NYC basketball fan Spike Lee wasted no time to bark at Plum. In the third quarter, Lee and Plum began chatting with each other while the Liberty held a 14-point lead.

Lee, who is known to get feisty at playoff basketball games in New York City, was tireless in his jabs while Plum, not a trash talk freak herself, fired back at him with precision. Some clips circulated online and many were happy to see Spike keeping the New York sports spirit alive.

“Spike Lee and Kelsey Plum doing the New York show is incredible,” one person tweeted. Another said: “Liberty up 59-44, Spike Lee and Kelsey Plum going back and forth. NYC basketball y’all lol #wnba.”

Someone else wrote: “It’s not New York playoff basketball until Spike Lee starts talking about an opposing player. Today it’s Kelsey Plum.”

The Liberty won Game 1 with an 87-77 victory over the Aces, with Game 2 taking place on Thursday. Plum is just the latest person to be added to Lee’s list of athletes he finds himself on par with in trash talk. Paul Pierce, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and so many more have spoken to Spike, but none are more memorable than Reggie Miller.

In Game 5 of the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals, Lee’s trash talk led to Miller’s 25-point fourth-quarter victory and later caused him to make the infamous choking gesture as the Pacers beat the Knicks. Speaking on The Dan Patrick Show, Miller explained that he made Lee “part of the game” when it came to trash-talking.
