How the Detroit Red Wings will play two games at the same time in two locations

Derek Lalonde put his weekend to good use: figuring out who would play where as the Detroit Red Wings faced the rare situation of playing two games at the same time in two different locations on Monday.

“Very unique,” Lalonde said Monday after the home team’s morning skate at Little Caesars Arena. Patrick Kane will be among those scheduled to play in that group against the Pittsburgh Penguins, in a game that was postponed to Saturday because the Penguins were unable to fly. Another group will travel to Buffalo to face the Sabers in a previously scheduled game.

“It actually works well,” Lalonde said. “We’re getting both teams going. I don’t know if it’s ideal, six games in six days. For a couple of players playing back-to-back or three-on-four it will be a little tiring, but “We’re pretty spread out so it’ll work.

“But we did it when we beat them so badly in training that the boys were begging for games. So it’s not such a bad schedule that’s going on here.”

On the move: Red Wings goalie Alex Lyon finds himself in a familiar position: Always be ready

The Wings play again on Tuesday in Pittsburgh, then on Thursday at home against the Toronto Maple Leafs, on Friday at home against the Ottawa Senators and on Saturday in Toronto.

Lalonde and his assistants will practice in Detroit on Monday, while Grand Rapids Griffins coach Dan Watson and his staff are in Buffalo.

Cam Talbot is expected to be in net in the first two periods against the Penguins and Sebastian Cossa in the third period.

In Buffalo, Alex Lyon is scheduled for the first two periods of the game and Jack Campbell for the third.

The Wings were at the LCA on Saturday afternoon when word came that the Penguins were having plane problems and the evening game would be postponed until at least 8:30 p.m. – perhaps even later.

“We were here for a while,” Kane said Monday, estimating the team was there for five or six hours. “I think we got the notification that the game was postponed until 8:30 a.m. right when I got to the rink, so we just sat around, watched golf, hung out and did different things. We were just waiting to hear an update.” Then they canceled our meeting, and then we kind of knew it was going to be canceled.

“But it’s nice that we’re trying again.”

While the Detroit Lions were in action across Woodward Avenue at Ford Field on Monday, Lalonde had a little fun with the Wings’ video team.

“I’ll watch,” he said. “I hope there is no challenge. Our video people are very, very invested in the Lions, and we lost some real attention hours because of our video coaches.”
