The basics

If I had a nickel for every time I’ve watched a show about a group of teenage girls stranded after a devastating plane crash, I’d have two nickels. “It’s not much, but it’s strange that it happened twice.”

Showtime’s Yellowjackets is a psychological drama available on various platforms including Paramount+, Showtime, Apple TV and Prime Video.

The show originally aired in 2021, with the second season premiering in 2023.

Set in 1996 and the present, the film is about a high school women’s soccer team whose plane crashes on the way to a national championship game.

Stranded in the wilderness, the girls – along with several male characters, including Trainer and their sons – must learn to survive while they wait for rescue.

The premise is not unusual. A notable comparison is Lostwhich aired from 2004 to 2010 and featured some well-known actors and actresses such as Evangeline Lily, Ian Somerhalder and Henry Ian Cusick. The cast desperately tried to survive on a deserted island.

Another similar show is The Wilderness on Prime Video, where a group of teenage girls crash land on a tropical island on their way to a spa vacation.

Yellowjackets has an air of mystery and an almost supernatural atmosphere. Early episodes show disturbing images of figures dressed in animal skins and a mysterious figure wearing a crown made of deer antlers. As the story unfolds, bizarre events begin to threaten the football team’s mental health.

The series isn’t just for teenagers; It features a large cast presenting two timelines. The adult versions of the teenagers come to terms with the traumatic events nearly 25 years ago that led to the brutal deaths of their friends. Themes of love, loss and murder permeate both timelines, ensuring there is enough to keep you hooked.

The review

I discovered it Yellowjackets just last week and watched the entire first season in just two days – classes were the only thing that slowed me down! Here are my thoughts:

  • Familiar and yet convincing: Although the premise may seem exaggerated, Yellowjackets offers a compelling narrative that deserves a chance.
  • Dual timelines: The interplay between past and present provides strong context, although some episodes lean too heavily on the present. Personally, I was more concerned with the past timeline, probably because my age was closer to teenagers than adults in their 40s.
  • Character development: The series introduces backstories for various characters episode after episode, but it falters midway through the season due to a lack of development for characters who later become more important. Some characters appear unexpectedly, which can be confusing.
  • Nostalgic and scary: The introduction evokes strong ’90s vibes, complemented by an unsettling soundtrack that adds to the overall creepiness of the series.
  • Predictable and yet surprising: Even though some moments are predictable, they often involve twists that shatter expectations.

Overall I would rate it Yellowjackets a solid seven out of ten. It is an excellent choice for fans of Lost And The Wildernesswith cross-generational appeal that also resonates with Generation X. The series received critical acclaim and features a star-studded cast including Christina Ricci, Ella Purnell and Courtney Eaton.

For a captivating mix of survival drama, psychological tension and supernatural intrigue. Yellowjackets is definitely worth a look!
