A cold front will move across New Mexico on Monday evening. Temperatures will cool briefly on Tuesday before record heat returns later this week.

It’s a record-breaking end to September in parts of New Mexico, with record highs being broken in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Socorro and Silver City. Scattered showers and storms also occurred in the state’s mountain ranges on Monday afternoon. These drifted southward during the day, but most of the rain evaporates before reaching the ground at lower elevations. The showers and storms will end overnight, but a cold front will move through the state from the northeast. The front brings gusty winds along and behind it. As of 7 a.m. Tuesday, easterly winds could be blowing around 40 miles per hour in Albuquerque, and southeastern New Mexico would also be windy. These winds will slowly ease throughout the day on Tuesday, with maximum temperatures between 5° and 10° cooler than today.

The high pressure will bring warmer temperatures again from Wednesday. This warming trend will continue into Friday, with more record and near-record temperatures, including in Albuquerque.

The first weekend of the Balloon Fiesta is going to be warm! Light winds in the early morning hours should allow all balloons to fly during the first weekend’s mass ascensions. Low temperatures will fall into the mid 50s, but afternoon highs will be in the mid to upper 80s.
