“Morning Joe” hosts Trump’s “particularly disgusting lie” about Hurricane Helene

MSNBC’s Willie Geist criticized Donald Trump’s “particularly disgusting lie” about the Biden administration’s efforts to assist Americans affected by Hurricane Helene.

Tuesdays Morning JoeGeist was responding to the Republican nominee’s false claims a day earlier that the White House was ignoring the disaster that left over 130 people dead and hundreds more missing, according to the Associated Press.

A series of clips showed Trump falsely claiming that Republican Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp had difficulty reaching President Joe Biden or outright denying that they had spoken.

“The governor is doing a very good job,” Trump told reporters in one of the clips during his visit to Valdosta, Georgia. “He’s having a hard time getting the president on the phone. I guess they’re not responding – the federal government isn’t responding.”

He also criticized Vice President Kamala Harris, saying she was “somewhere on the campaign trail looking for money.”

Another clip showed Trump falsely refuting a reporter who said Kemp had spoken to Biden the day before. Kemp said publicly that Biden called him Sunday afternoon. “He just said, ‘Hey, what do you need?'” Kemp quoted Biden as saying. “And I told him, you know, we have what we need. We will work through the federal process. He offered that if there were other things we just had to call him directly, which I really appreciated.”

Biden himself called out his predecessor on Monday when a journalist asked about Trump’s allegations that he had ignored Kemp.

“He’s lying,” Biden said in the Oval Office on Monday. “Let me be clear: He’s lying, and the governor told me he’s lying.” Biden went on to say he “doesn’t know” why Trump “does this.”

“The reason I’m so angry about this is because I don’t care what he says about me, but I do care what he says to people in need,” Biden continued. “It suggests that we are not doing everything we can. This is us.”

“That is a particularly disgusting lie,” Geist continued Morning Joe On Tuesday I spoke to Jonathan Lemire about the saga. “When the people there need help, they suggest that the White House and FEMA – because the Democrats don’t want Donald Trump to win – of course everything falls back on him, they turn their backs on him.”

“He has also suggested that the White House and this federal government are ignoring MAGA supporters in red counties,” Geist continued. “Of course that’s not true. Only – not even in this moment of destruction and devastation and people so desperately in need of clarity and help, he can’t even put aside his ego and his cheap insults.”

Lemire agreed, saying Trump “refuses to do it.”

“Resistance to the country is one of Donald Trump’s themes,” Lemire said. “And this is a moment where that’s a particularly dangerous lie, because if he’s out there saying, ‘Well, the federal government is ignoring those affected by this storm,’ those affected by the storm could prevent you from even seeking help.”

He continued to accuse Trump of “only thinking about himself,” adding that he may be a “drain on resources” in Georgia with his visit Monday. “He wanted to go to the political photo op,” Lemire said. “Vice President Harris says she will be leaving in the coming days, but she wants to ensure she does not unnecessarily distract from recovery efforts.”
