China Open: Carlos Alcaraz beats Daniil Medvedev to reach final

Carlos Alcaraz reached the China Open final with a straight sets victory over Daniil Medvedev.

The world number three needed just 88 minutes to claim a 7-5, 6-3 victory.

It is Alcaraz’s eighth consecutive win since his surprise second-round loss to Botic van de Zandschulp at the US Open.

The four-time Grand Slam winner will play for the title against world number one and defending champion Jannik Sinner or the Chinese wildcard player Bu Yunchaokete.

In a tight first set, the players failed to hold serve four games in a row, leaving the score even at 4-4.

Spaniard Alcaraz broke again in the 10th game before holding serve and taking the first set after 48 minutes.

Medvedev needed two medical timeouts to treat his left leg as Alcaraz took control of the second set and secured victory on his fourth match point.

“It was a little unusual that serve was broken many times in the first set,” Alcaraz said. “I don’t know what happened to me. I probably lost focus a little bit.”

“I’m really glad that I didn’t lose my concentration for too long in the first set. I got it back straight away when I was broken and I’m really happy that at the end of the set I was able to play really good tennis.”

In the final qualifying round for the Shanghai Masters, Brit Dan Evans defeated Australian Alex Bolt 6-2, 1-6, 7-5.

Compatriot Jack Draper withdrew from the event – the highest-ranked regular tournament below the Grand Slams – on Monday due to an abdominal injury.
