Mike McDaniel’s play-calling update will not go over well with Dolphins fans

The Miami Dolphins fan base won’t like what Mike McDaniel said at a press conference this week. You can expect a continued lack of self-reflection from the head coach.

The Dolphins’ offense has been a mess so far in 2024, and it’s more than just the loss of Tua Tagovailoa that’s causing the problem. McDaniel seems to have reached the same level of stubbornness as some of his failed predecessors.

What Dolphins fans have seen on the field for three years hasn’t always been good, and one area that needs improvement is playmaking. McDaniel knew this could be an issue when he brought it up in the offseason. At the time, McDaniel said he thought about it, but now he says emphatically he won’t give up those duties.

Fans only take the news with a sense of humor. The Dolphins may not have anyone better, but that too is a direct reflection of the head coach and his ability to build a quality offensive team. Obviously Frank Smith is not qualified based on what McDaniel is telling the media.

What this means is simple. The Dolphins will continue to break off the run to throw the ball with a quarterback unable to stay consistent, and McDaniel will continue to put the Dolphins in bad shape by not getting the play into the huddle in a timely manner.

It’s important to note that when Stephen Ross hired Adam Gase, Gase also named the plays. It wasn’t well received, and one would think that Ross would have been far less likely to repeat the same mistake. That’s not the case, and here we are again.

It may seem superficial to look at the first three games and wonder why he isn’t relinquishing his duties, but this problem dates back to last year and the year before that. McDaniel caught a pass in his rookie season, and many overlooked the issues last year when the Dolphins won. McDaniel’s play calls were exposed against better football teams and the Dolphins were beaten.

This year there’s nothing exciting about what McDaniel calls, and now we know that won’t change, if at all, this year either.
