Detroit Lions TE is ready to start against the Seahawks

Sam LaPorta “looked really good” upon returning to practice on Friday and will play for the Detroit Lions in Monday night’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.

“That was good to see,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said Saturday at the team’s practice facility in Allen Park. “So he recovered quickly and healed well. So no, he’s fine.”

LaPorta sprained his left ankle while blocking a Lions hook-and-lateral touchdown late in the first half of last week’s win over the Arizona Cardinals.

He missed practice on Thursday and returned on a limited basis on Friday.

LaPorta, the Lions’ second-leading receiver last season, has gotten off to a slow start this year after missing some time in training camp with a hamstring strain. He has eight catches for 94 yards and no touchdowns in three games, but could play an important role Monday against Seattle’s top-ranked pass defense.

Last year, LaPorta caught 86 passes for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns and made the Pro Bowl as a rookie.

In other injury news, Campbell said that the Lions do not expect Frank Ragnow to end up on injured reserve with his partially torn pectoral muscle – the Lions have a bye after Monday’s game, giving Ragnow additional time to rest – and that rookie Guard Christian Mahogany could return to practice after being bye from the non-football injured list. Campbell still has no timetable for Ifeatu Melifonwu’s return from an Achilles tendon injury.

Melifonwu will miss his fourth straight game on Monday.
