Tropical Storm Kirk develops into a major hurricane | Hurricane Center

According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Tropical Storm Kirk formed late Monday morning in the eastern tropical Atlantic, the eleventh named storm to form during the 2024 hurricane season.

Kirk is about 800 miles west of Cabo Verde and was producing sustained winds of 60 mph and moving west at 12 mph as of 4 p.m. Monday. Meteorologists at the National Hurricane Center expect Kirk to strengthen significantly as it turns west-northwest over the next day, moving over warm water and through a moist, low-shear environment.

“Rapid intensification remains a notable possibility if this system can seal off its inner core,” NHC forecaster Eric Blake said in an update Monday afternoon.

The NHC’s latest forecast shows Kirk reaching hurricane status Tuesday afternoon before further strengthening into a major hurricane by 2 p.m. Thursday. Blake said the storm could reach Category 4 strength, with sustained winds of at least 130 miles per hour.

The storm does not currently pose a threat to Louisiana and no related warnings or warnings have been issued for landmasses around the world.

Unrest was approaching the Gulf

According to the NHC, a low pressure trough over the southwestern Caribbean Sea caused disorganized showers and thunderstorms on Monday afternoon. Forecasters said the system could gradually develop into a tropical depression or storm as it moves toward the southern Gulf of Mexico.

It’s too early to tell where the system might go as it continues to develop, but forecasters said the U.S. Gulf Coast should monitor its progress.

Tropical wave near Cabo Verde

A tropical wave a few hundred miles south of Cabo Verde is “very likely” to develop into a tropical depression or storm within the next few days as it moves west, forecasters said Monday.

According to the NHC, there is a 90% chance of the system forming within the next week.

Isaac and Joyce

Both Isaac and Joyce had continued to weaken as they swirled through the open sea on Monday afternoon. They were not expected to reach land before disbanding.
