Schools in Augusta County, Staunton and Waynesboro will be closed Monday, September 30th

This story has been updated with new information.

Augusta County Public Schools, Staunton City Schools and Waynesboro Public Schools will all be closed Monday, September 30th.

“Due to local road closures and the possibility of further flooding later tomorrow, schools will remain closed to all students and staff on Monday, September 30,” said an email from Staunton Superintendent Garett Smith shortly before 7 p.m on Sunday.

Augusta County Superintendent Eric Bond called families about 6:30 p.m. Sunday to inform them of the decision.

Waynesboro did not announce the closure of schools until after 9:30 p.m. Sunday and posted it on social media and the school division’s website.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for Staunton, Augusta County and Waynesboro through Monday morning. Slow moving showers and possible thunderstorms are expected throughout Sunday evening.

The area, particularly eastern Augusta County, received heavy rain Friday, several roads were closed Friday and an evacuation was even recommended for Sherando, Creekside and Back Creek Friday evening.

The area had a break on Saturday, the rain stopped and even seemed a little, but on Sunday the rain returned to the area.
