The Chicago Cubs’ division rival Cardinals are undergoing massive changes in the front office

The Chicago Cubs will enter the offseason looking for ways to get into the playoffs.

That’s happened every year since 2020, and after their World Series title in 2016, they’ve advanced in the postseason just once in three occasions.

Many organizations around the league would be happy to trade with the Cubs for their top-notch starting pitching and strong farm system. So Chicago’s situation isn’t entirely dire, but they’re still looking for a way to get over the hump after missing the mark again this year.

There’s a lot of pressure on Jed Hoyer, and there’s a chance he’ll lead this team for the last time if they don’t make the playoffs in 2025.

While the Cubs could be in for major changes, their division rival St. Louis Cardinals have already announced that they will be making some noise in their front office after the upcoming season.

According to MLB.com’s John Denton, Chaim Bloom will be the next president of baseball operations, replacing John Mozeliak, who has served as general manager in the Cardinals’ front office since 2007.

Mozeliak was the architect of St. Louis’ 2011 championship team and won three Executive of the Year Awards. Once his contract expires at the end of the 2025 season, he will assume various duties as Bloom assumes the role of president of baseball operations on a five-year contract.

During the upcoming season, Bloom will oversee Denton’s player development system. His goal is to overhaul their pipeline after spending the past year evaluating each minor league level and the prospects on those rosters.

The Cardinals made the playoffs in 2022, but by this franchise’s standards, it feels like a lifetime since they’ve competed for a title.

Considering they haven’t won a round since 2019, when they lost in the National League Championship Series, this hasn’t been as dominant a club as they were in the early to mid-2010s.

These changes could impact what happens in Chicago.

St. Louis has often been the target of some of the top free agents on the market, receiving fair market value for a chance to compete for a championship.

It will take a while for the Cardinals to get to that point again.

The Cubs need to take advantage of these changes.

With the NL Central largely just a two-team race at this point between them and the Milwaukee Brewers, St. Louis’ decision to reshape their front office could mean one less competitor when it comes to free agent signings in this one to commit to winter.
