The Kansas City Chiefs offense suffered a major blow on Sunday when Patrick Mahomes collided with Rashee Rice and the wide receiver had to leave the game.

Rice was diagnosed with a right knee injury and the team reportedly feared he may have torn his ACL. He was the recipient of a Mahomes shoulder as he attempted to tackle Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Kristian Fulton after an interception.

“Obviously the corner was a good play. I tried to shoot it at (Travis Kelce) on his body,” Mahomes said. “I knocked him over a little bit, turned the ball over and then I thought Rashee made a really good play. That never happens. So you just have to try to get better at it.

“I didn’t know exactly what happened because of course I was trying to make a tackle, but I know Rashee and I know how strong he is. Since he was lying on the ground, I knew it wasn’t good. We’re just doing.’ I’m praying that the X-rays, MRIs and stuff like that are better than they looked, but I mean, it’s next guy’s turn until he gets back.

Rice carefully walked back to the bench before being carried off the field on a cart.

“I feel terrible for Rashee,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “…We’ll hope for the best.”

This would be a huge loss for the Chiefs, who are already without Hollywood Brown this season after he suffered a season-ending injury before he could even take a snap with his new team.

Kansas City will also be without star running back Isiah Pacheco for weeks after he suffered a broken fibula in Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Rice’s return to an NFL playing field is also unclear due to off-field issues. He is awaiting trial on multiple charges related to a high-speed car crash in March on a Texas highway. Rice could face disciplinary action from the NFL following the lawsuit.

Rice, who didn’t have a catch in that game, would finish the season with 288 yards on 24 receptions and two receiving touchdowns if he was actually finished for the season.
