Breaking down why Giants decided to fire general manager Farhan Zaidi

The San Francisco Giants made a drastic change on Monday, firing president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi. Zaidi is out, and former Giants superstar and future Hall of Famer Buster Posey replaces the seven-term president.

Giants chairman Greg Johnson released a statement regarding the decision to select Posey.

“We are looking for someone who can define, lead and lead the baseball philosophy of this franchise and we feel Buster is a perfect fit,” Johnson said. “Buster has the demeanor, intelligence and drive to do this job, and we are confident that he and Bob Melvin will work together to bring successful baseball back to San Francisco.”

Earlier this month, the team’s decision was clear when The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly detailed how Posey “personally” handled third baseman Matt Chapman to finalize a six-year, $151 million extension.

Posey joined the Giants in 2022 after their board became “so frustrated with the lack of immediate progress” between Zaidi and Chapman’s agent Scott Boras.

Baggarly also went on to say that the Giants’ possession situation did not allow Zaidi and Boras to finish at the rim.

Ultimately, the decision came down to results. Under Zaidi, the Giants reached the postseason only once in seven years. Zaidi has never been able to put a consistent team on the diamond year after year, which doesn’t reflect the winning culture the Giants have cultivated throughout their history.

Zaidi was hired in 2018 to overhaul the organization, but that wasn’t the case. The team’s only postseason appearance came in 2021, when it won the National League West and posted the most wins in its franchise with 107.

These 107 wins are the most in franchise history, surpassing the 106 wins of the 1904 New York Giants. The Giants failed in 2021, losing in the National League Division Series in a thrilling five-game series against their biggest rival, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Giants haven’t made the postseason since.

Posey is now tasked with leading the Giants as far as possible. All eyes will be on the future Hall of Famer, who helped lead the Giants to three World Series titles, seven career All-Star honors, 2012 NL MVP, 2010 NL Rookie of the Year and Gold Glove was named 2016 honoree.

It’s now a new era in Giants baseball. This winter will tell us a lot.
