Norway’s first public charging station for electric trucks opens in Oslo

Norway has opened its first public charging station exclusively for electric trucks in a major move towards greener transport. Located in Oslo, the charging station is a joint project between Kempower, Wennstrom and Fastcharge and represents a crucial step in the country’s journey towards electromobility in the heavy-duty vehicle sector.

Opened on July 25, the charging station offers up to 400 kW of power per charging point, using Kempower’s advanced DC fast charging solutions. This initiative is in line with Norway’s ambitious goal of making all new trucks sold in the country electric by 2030, thereby reducing the 17% of greenhouse gas emissions currently attributed to road transport.

“Offering a public, reliable, scalable and user-friendly charging option for trucks on the move is crucial for the introduction of electric trucks,” says Erik Kanerva, Sales Manager for Northern Europe at Kempower. This groundbreaking truck charging project with Fastcharge and Wennstrom is a big step forward for the electrification of transport in Norway.”

Fastcharge, the operator of the charging station, plans to open three more public charging stations for trucks across Norway by the end of the year, including in Ringsaker, Sandefjord, Gjesdal, Bergen and Malvik. “We want to be the first choice for transport companies by offering a premium service,” says Harald Grytten, CEO of Fastcharge. “And at the same time facilitate the transition to electrification of the transport fleet at a lower total cost of ownership.”

The site features Kempower’s modular scalable converter cabinet solution, capable of delivering up to 600kW of total charging power. The design allows for future compatibility with Kempower’s Megawatt Charging System (MCS), addressing the needs of the next generation of electric trucks.

“Our commitment and dedication to creating reliable, scalable and user-friendly charging stations for trucks reflects our shared vision for sustainable transport,” says Joakim Opsahl, Sales Director at Wennstrom. “Together we are paving the way to a greener future.”

This groundbreaking initiative not only provides the basic infrastructure for Norway’s growing electric truck fleet, but also sets a precedent for similar projects across Europe and could accelerate the continent’s transformation towards sustainable heavy-duty transport.
