Why it is important that Trump now also wants to prosecute Harris

Earlier last week, Donald Trump called for the prosecution of those who criticize Supreme Court judges and justices, despite the existence of the First Amendment and his own history of condemning Supreme Court judges and justices. A few days later, the former president held a bizarre press conference in which, among other things, he called for the prosecution of House Speaker Emeritus Nancy Pelosi.

However, he had only just begun. On Friday, the Republican also called for criminal prosecution of Google in response to a strange new conspiracy theory. On Saturday, Trump repeated his earlier threat to prosecute those he believes “cheated” in the 2024 election. In a new twist, the GOP nominee added that he also wants to “go back” to the 2020 race and prosecute those he believed were defrauded back then.

All of this, of course, set the stage for Trump to declare this a day later He wants Vice President Kamala Harris to be prosecutedto. He never got around to naming any crimes the Democrat might have committed, but his Pennsylvania audience still responded in predictable fashion: The Republican’s supporters chanted, “Lock her up!”

While this is all completely at odds with how American politics is supposed to work, especially at the national level, the speed and scope of Trump’s law enforcement offensive might make it seem irrelevant, if not a little silly. In fact, at first glance, it appears that we are dealing with a White House hopeful who is filing new criminal charges against various enemies almost daily.

But it would be a mistake to simply dismiss the former president’s strange rhetoric as background noise — because, as the Wall Street Journal reported over the weekend, Trump and his team have ambitious plans for federal law enforcement.

Nothing has motivated or infuriated Trump more than his relationship with the agency. He is determined to remake it in ways that will energize the troublemakers in his base – by replacing career employees with loyalists, by ordering investigations into those who prosecuted him and by shifting the Justice Department to the conservative side side of the recent culture wars.

It’s not exactly a secret that during his tenure in the White House, Trump made scandalous efforts to weaponize the Justice Department and launched desperate attempts in hopes of getting federal prosecutors to file charges against people he didn’t like.

But there is every reason to believe that a second Trump term would be far worse, especially because he and his team now know how and why their gun efforts failed the first time.
