Transgender author Harper Steele said Indiana’s anti-trans governor Eric Holcomb “abandoned all his principles” to take a photo with the comedian and her 30-year-old boyfriend Will Ferrell.

Steele, who came out and transitioned during the COVID-19 pandemic, commented on this Late Night with Seth Meyers while we talk about the Netflix documentary Will & Harperin which she and Ferrell “take to the open road together to process this new phase of their friendship and reintroduce her to the country she loves – this time as herself.”

For 16 days, the two drove from New York to Los Angeles, visiting places that are important to them, their friendship and America.

And on Wednesday’s (Sept. 25) episode of the talk show, Steele focused on attending a basketball game where she and her best friend met Republican Eric Holcomb, who has previously supported several anti-trans bills in his state.

Eric Holcomb, who succeeded former Vice President Mike Pence as governor in 2017, has backed a bill that would require schools to release transgender students to their parents and a ban on gender-affirming services for transgender youth.

“We’re having an awkward moment with the governor of Indiana, who isn’t much of a transgender guy, but he needed to get a photo with Will so badly that he abandoned all of his principles,” Steele said, according to Huffington Post. “And that’s exactly what Will does for me.”

In the documentary, Farrell said of the encounter that he “dropped the ball” and told Steele, “I wish I had the wherewithal to ask, ‘How do you feel about trans people?'”

While speaking to PinkNews about the documentary, Farrell encouraged his straight cis fans to watch it.

“If you have any idea that you want to look at, I’ll put it this way: When we started working on this, one of the things we discussed was, ‘Okay, if we have something here that’s watchable and entertaining. ‘ Whatever the level, I wonder if my audience (who wouldn’t necessarily be drawn to something like that) will give something like this a chance?'” Eleven Star said.

“I would say: give him a chance. It’s a funny movie, you will be surprised. Only Harper and Will talk. That’s all.”

Josh Greenbaum, a longtime friend of Ferrell and Steele who made the documentary, didn’t want it to be seen as a political film.

“It’s a very intimate, personal story between two people. However, we know that it carries over into the political sphere.

“Every political issue is about something very human, and when you give it a human face and a story, I think it helps people understand it better,” he said. “For those who don’t know a trans person, well, now you know. You know Harper and she is an incredible, funny, warm, complicated, brilliant person.”

Will & Harper is now streaming on Netflix.
