Netflix’s best new movie comes with a 99% critic score

Netflix has produced a surprising number of good films today, even though we’re usually talking about something in the scripted realm. Now comes his best new film, Will and Harper, from comedy legend Will Ferrell in an unscripted format, a documentary in which Ferrell travels around the country with his friend Harper Steele, who recently came out as transgender, trying to To understand the concept he is not too familiar with it.

Currently, the film has a stunning 99% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes with 85 reviews, and that’s only one negative review of all time that has the film at 100. The audience rating is also quite good at 80% across several hundred reviews, and despite so much anti-trans rhetoric these days, it hasn’t been sunk or bombed because of its subject matter.

Here is a longer description of the film:

“Three years ago, Will Ferrell was making a film when he received a very surprising email: his dear friend of almost 30 years came out to him as a trans woman. That friend was Harper Steele, a writer he met on his first day at Saturday Night Live in 1995. From that fateful first meeting in the halls of 30 Rock, Will knew he had found a perfect combination of comedy, friendship and creativity. The partnership would only continue to grow over the next three decades.

In this intimate, honest and heartfelt documentary, Will and Harper set out together to come to terms with this new phase of their friendship and reintroduce Harper to the country she loves – this time as herself. The two travel over 16 days from New York to LA, visiting stops that are meaningful to them, their friendship and America. Through laughter, tears, and many cans of Pringles, they push past their comfort zones as they examine their relationships to these spaces and to each other in this new light.”

Will and Harper is currently at number 4 on Netflix’s top 10 list, which is pretty solid. At least it’s over Rebel Ridge, Uglies and the ubiquitous Super Mario Bros. movie. The top three currently are Jailbreak: Love on the Run, The Garfield Movie and Rez Ball, the latter of which once again has a truly excellent score of 95% because it’s about a Native American high school basketball team acts that is struggling with the defeat of a teammate. It sounds really good too, so I’ll add it to the list. But first Will and Harper.
