Will Ferrell has insisted his new documentary be released before Election Day so people can discuss transgender rights.

The Netflix film “Will & Harper” follows famous comedian and his best friend Harper Steele on a cross-country road trip after he comes out as a trans woman.

It captures the trials and tribulations the duo faced when Steele transitioned later in life and Ferrell was reintroduced to his friend.

Transgender issues are a hot topic this election season and the Step Brothers star revealed that it was important to him that the film be released before voters go to the polls.

“When we met with Netflix, we made it clear that we wanted to get this out before the election,” Ferrell told Variety.

“We wanted it to have enough runway for people to see it and hopefully have important discussions in their living rooms.”

“We’ve heard from people who say they can’t wait to watch this with friends and family who may not share the same viewpoint, and that they’re looking forward to watching it all together.”

The decision left fans divided. Some said Ferrell was out of touch because he believed conversations about transgender rights were a priority for the average American this election season.

“Important discussions? More of a distraction from reality,” one person said.

“Most Americans don’t “discuss” such things. They talk about sports or living expenses or work or hobbies or who’s dating who. “The only people obsessed with trans people are trans activists,” said another.

Others said the actor came from a good place but missed the mark with his intentions.

“I love Ferrell and fully support both of them, trans people and acceptance and inclusion.” “I don’t think this doctor is making a big difference,” one person said.

“It’s great that Ferrell is supporting his friend.” Ferrell has no daughters. “He really shouldn’t be telling those of us who don’t want trans women invading (invading) our women’s spaces with our daughters (or us) what to think about it,” said another.

Some said the film sparked discussions about keeping biological men out of women’s spaces.

“Yes, about how we need to protect women’s spaces and sports from predatory men.” “If they feel like a woman, they’re welcome to talk to other men in men’s spaces,” one person said.

“I can’t wait to have an important discussion about a privileged white man telling women and girls that they shouldn’t be harassed by men in their spaces,” said another.

There were other viewers who supported Ferrell’s decisions and agreed that it was important to watch the film before Election Day.
