Medgar and Myrlie Evers’ missing granddaughter has been found

Police have found a missing Georgia woman, the granddaughter of civil rights activists Medgar and Myrlie Evers.

Nicole Evers-Everette, known as Niki, has been found and her family has been notified, the Gwinnett County Police Department said on Facebook Friday morning.

Before the announcement, both police and the Georgia National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) had asked for help finding Evers-Everette. “Nicole is a beloved member of our community and the entire Georgia NAACP is committed to bringing her home safely,” the Georgia NAACP said on its website.

She was last heard from around 5:55 p.m. Sunday evening and was reported missing from her home in Duluth, according to a statement from the

Gwinnett County police asked for help finding the 36-year-old Friday morning and said a friend reported her missing on Tuesday. The friend said they hadn’t heard from Evers-Everette in several days.

When officers went to her home to speak with her, they were unable to find her, police said in an online news release.

According to Evers-Everette’s mother, Reena Evers-Everette, she also hadn’t heard from her daughter in two days and was worried. She said several years ago her daughter left the state without notifying anyone and was gone for days before anyone found her, so she was worried.

Police investigators found security footage from the woman’s home that showed her leaving with a suitcase on Monday. According to her mother, her car was last seen Monday evening at Keys Ferry Road and McCart Road.

“I am worried and afraid for my daughter Niki,” her mother said in a news release posted on the Georgia NAACP website. “She did not report to work this week, which is highly unusual.”

She said she speaks to her daughter regularly. So if she can’t reach them, that’s worrying. Her daughter left without her cell phone, purse or other items.

“I keep praying that she will be okay and come back to us soon,” her mother said before she was found. “The timing is crucial because Niki has an illness that requires medication that she doesn’t have.”

Evers-Everette is the granddaughter of two Mississippi civil rights activists

Evers-Everette is the granddaughter of Medgar and Myrlie Evers. Medgar served as Secretary of State for the Mississippi branch of the NAACP while his wife worked with him to protest segregation, lynchings and more in the state of Mississippi.

Medgar was killed in the family’s driveway in Jackson on June 12, 1963. His widow Myrlie ensured that her husband’s murderer, Byron De La Beckwith, was convicted in 1994. Before sentencing, two all-white jurors refused to convict the man.

According to the NAACP website, Myrlie also served as chair of the NAACP board from 1995 to 1998.
