Atlético Madrid bans fan for throwing Courtois projectiles in the derby

Atlético Madrid has given a fan a permanent ban for throwing objects onto the pitch during the Madrid derby, the club said on Monday.

Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Real Madrid at the Metropolitano was interrupted by referee Mateo Busquets Ferrer midway through the second half – minutes after the visitors had taken the lead through Éder Militão – after objects such as lighters and plastic bottles were thrown in Real’s direction Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

The referee initially stopped the game for 10 minutes and the game was stopped for around 20 minutes in total while the crowd was warned to stop this behavior or the game would be stopped permanently.

After the game, both Atlético coach Diego Simeone and captain Koke criticized Courtois, saying that his celebration of Militão’s goal contributed to the incident.

On Monday, Atlético said that “the club has taken the decision to permanently expel from the pitch the person identified yesterday by the police, in collaboration with our security department, who was involved in throwing objects during the derby.”

“Our security department continues to work with police to identify the remaining individuals involved in the throwing of objects. Once identified, they will be permanently expelled,” the club said.

During the suspension, Simeone, Koke and Atlético defender José María Giménez walked to the fans behind the goal, where at least two people in the crowd were wearing balaclavas.

On Monday, the club said it would “soon incorporate into its internal regulations the ban on the use of any element or item of clothing to conceal one’s identity.”
