The National Weather Service is warning of an increased risk of rip currents on local beaches Thursday and Friday.

Dangerous rip currents are expected in Ocean County during the day. The warning lasts until Thursday at 8 p.m. – and is expected to be extended.

“Rip currents can push even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water,” the NWS said in a statement. “Swim near a lifeguard. If you find yourself caught in a current, relax and let yourself go. Don’t swim against the current. If possible, swim in a direction that follows the shore. If you cannot escape, look toward the shore and call or wave for help.”

According to the NWS Surf Zone forecast, rip current danger will be “high” Friday with waves reaching 3 to 4 feet in the surf. South-southeast winds are expected to reach 10 mph, with ocean water temperatures remaining in the high 60s. The high tide occurs around 3:12 p.m

Currents are also expected to be “moderate” on Friday, with wave heights in the surf zone of 2 to 3 feet.

A high risk of rip currents means life-threatening rips in the surf zone are “likely,” while a moderate risk means they are “possible,” according to the NWS forecast.
