AEW star MJF takes on role in Happy Gilmore sequel

After making his big screen debut in A24’s The Iron Claw last year, former AEW World Champion Maxwell Jacob Friedman, aka MJF, will soon star in another Hollywood film – this time alongside Adam Sandler. According to Deadline, MJF has landed a role in Happy Gilmore 2, the sequel to Sandler’s popular 1996 comedy about a former hockey player whose anger issues make him notorious on the PGA Tour, where his golf game earns him enough money to save up his grandmother’s house. According to the broadcaster, details about MJF’s role and the plot of the film are not yet known.

It was also announced on Friday that music sensation Bad Bunny, who has made WWE appearances including a street fight in Puerto Rico against Damian Priest, has also been cast in the film. Sandler also hinted at the idea that Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce could also play. Deadline reported that MJF recently wrapped filming an independent comedy called The Floaters with Seth Green. He also recently directed a feature film called “Stranglehold” alongside Ron Perlman. In addition to his role as Larry Von Erich in The Iron Claw, Friedman also landed the role of executive producer for the film.

MJF was last seen on AEW programming at All Out, where he defeated Daniel Garcia in a brutal match that may have been Garcia’s last in AEW. MJF seemed to be off TV for a while after taking a second rope rammer from Garcia after the match. A timetable for his return has not been given and the reasons for MJF’s hiatus have not been revealed.
