Rain delay Yankees vs. Pirates on Sunday (9/29/24): When does the game start?

UPDATE: First pitch is now scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Yankee Stadium, although more rain is in the forecast.

NEW YORK – After wet and messy conditions on Saturday, more rain is forecast for Sunday afternoon in the Bronx, delaying the start of Game 162 between the Yankees and Pirates.

Weather.com says light rain and showers will continue at Yankee Stadium Sunday until about 6 p.m.

First pitch for the final game of the regular season was originally scheduled for 3:05 p.m. As of 3 p.m., there is an 80 percent chance of rain in the area, according to the Weather.com forecast (as of 2:30 p.m.).

An hour later there is a 58 percent chance of rain. At 5 p.m. that number drops to 41 percent, with dry and cloudy conditions forecast for the rest of the day.

The Yankees announced that Sunday’s game would not start on time nearly half an hour before the original start time.

Restore the glory

Sunday’s game is completely meaningless for both teams’ standings and postseason selection. The Yankees already secured first place in the American League on Saturday and thus secured home field advantage in the Championship Series. They will play the winner of the Wild Card round between the Orioles and either the Tigers or Royals. Pittsburgh has been eliminated from playoff contention.

Still, Sunday is an important game for a select few Yankees. Clarke Schmidt gets the start and fights for a spot in the Division Series postseason rotation.
