Are coach Jonathan Smith and Michigan State on the right track after five games?

After returning home to face Ohio State in East Lansing, Michigan State lost its second straight game by a score of 38-7. The Spartans’ season has taken on a different tone than it began, as they have lost two straight games after winning their first three games.

Against Ohio State, the Spartans had several opportunities to keep the game close. However, turnovers and poor play on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball were too much for Michigan State to overcome.

After the loss, coach Jonathan Smith noted that he refused to let the team focus on missed opportunities.

“We didn’t look into it any further,” Smith said. “Of course we talked a little bit about how we need to improve our ball security. We talked about wanting to win the third quarter. If we can win the third quarter by the total number of points, whatever that may be, it would be within reach in the fourth game, and we didn’t do that.”

Michigan State is a team with many new players added through the transfer portal and a new coaching staff. There were a lot of unknowns about the Spartans’ start to the season, even for Smith and his coaching staff. After the first five games of the season, Smith revealed what he had learned about his team.

“We’re going to compete with just about anyone we compete with,” Smith said. “If we clean that up, every ballgame if we can clean up something on the turnover play and get off the field on third down, we’ll have a chance to win it.”

Michigan State won’t have much time to rest as they travel to the West Coast to face Oregon, a familiar opponent for Smith. After taking on one of the best teams in the country, the Spartans travel once again to the other side of the country. Still, Smith says this week is as important as any other for the Spartans.

“Every week is important,” Smith said. “It will be a short week. Reload, recover, turn our thoughts to another really good opponent, a talented opponent.”
