The Southeastern Conference could have a new No. 1 team in the country in Week 6.

In Week 5’s national headliner, No. 4 Alabama defended its home opener and picked up its first big win of the Kalen DeBoer era as the Crimson Tide defeated No. 1 Georgia 41-34 on Saturday.

For much of the first half, it appeared as if Alabama would pull out a win over the top-ranked Bulldogs, building a seemingly insurmountable 28-0 lead. But Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs weren’t deterred, outscoring the Crimson Tide 27-11 in the second half and briefly taking a 34-33 lead with 2:31 to play.

But key plays from the Alabama freshmen on both sides of the ball helped DeBoer and Co. stave off the Bulldogs’ greatest comeback in program history. The first was a 75-yard catch-and-run by 17-year-old Ryan Williams for a touchdown that gave Alabama a 41-34 lead after the 2-point conversion. The last one was a game-winning interception in the end zone by Zabien Brown.

Elsewhere, Arch Manning started his second straight game for No. 2 Texas while Quinn Ewers continues to recover from an oblique strain in Week 3. Manning showed another glimpse of the future in Austin, as the 6-foot-4 quarterback led Texas to its first-ever SEC victory over Mississippi State after going 26 of 31 passing for 324 yards and two touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Kentucky picked up its biggest win of the Mark Stoops era when the Wildcats defeated No. 5 Ole Miss on the road in Oxford. It is only the sixth home loss for Ole Miss since Lane Kiffin in 2020. Texas A&M won the Southwest Classic against Arkansas 21-17 also at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
