“Bowen Yang’s Moo Deng Channels Chappell Roan on ‘SNL’ Weekend Update”

While Chappell Roan was very serious in her requests for fans to respect her privacy, Saturday Night Live found a way to shed light on the situation in this weekend’s Season 50 premiere by comparing the red-hot pop star to Moo Deng, the two-month-old pygmy hippopotamus who lives in a zoo in Thailand.

On Saturday evening Weekend updateBowen Yang portrayed the viral hippo, who confided in Colin Jost about how hard it was to get the world’s attention and be pelted with bananas and shellfish by zoo visitors.

“The response has been overwhelming, but it’s gotten to the point where I have to set some boundaries,” Yang said, then paraphrasing Roan’s words. “Reminder: Women don’t owe you anything. When I’m in my enclosure, tripping over things, or biting my trainer’s knee, I’m at work. This is the project. Don’t call my name or expect a photo just because I’m your parasocial best friend or because you appreciate my talent.”

The “Good Luck, Babe!” takes place in August. The singer made headlines for speaking out against toxic fan behavior and describing her experiences with stalking and boundary crossing in recent months. “I’ve had too many non-consensual physical and social interactions and I just have to lay it out and remind you that women don’t owe you anything,” she wrote in an Instagram post at the time. “I chose this career path because I love music and art and respect my inner child. I do not accept harassment of any kind for choosing this path, nor do I deserve it.”

Yang like Moo Deng further joked, “Before me, the only hippos in the media were either Hungry, Hungry or Jada Pinkett in.” Madagascar. But now I’m your favorite hippo’s favorite hippo.”

When Jost suggested that Yang’s Moo Deng sounded a lot like Chappell Roan, that was it Weekend update The host asked if she even knew who Roan was. “I’m 10 weeks old, Colin. Of course I know Chappell Roan,” Yang said. “And by the way, leave her alone! Give her as much time as she needs for her mental health.”

On Friday, Roan canceled her scheduled appearances at the All Things Go Festival in New York and Maryland, writing on her Instagram Story, “I apologize to the people who were waiting to see me in NYC and DC this weekend.” on All Things Go, but I can’t perform. Things have become overwhelming over the last few weeks and I’m really feeling it. I’m feeling pressure to prioritize a lot of things right now and I need a few days to prioritize my health. I want to be at my performances and give the best show possible.”

To SNLMoo Deng also echoed Roan’s comments about why she wouldn’t support a presidential candidate. “I know I’m only 10 weeks old, but this is very important to me, so please listen: I will not be endorsing anyone in this year’s election.” Roan recently said that she would not be endorsing anyone in the US presidential election , but then later clarified that she would vote for Kamala Harris after backlash from fans.

The Weekend update The segment wasn’t Yang’s only nod to Roan on Saturday’s episode: In a skit later that night, Yang referenced the classic show I love Lucy as “femininomenon”, based on a song by Chappell Roan.
