Arlington County crews are conducting rescue operations in southwest Virginia after Hurricane Helene caused flooding

VIRGINIA (DC News now) – Video released by the Arlington County Fire Department shows the moment emergency crews pulled more than 10 people to safety after rising floodwaters caused by Hurricane Helene inundated a bridge in Damascus, Virginia.

On Friday, September 27, the Arlington County Water Rescue Team responded to Mountain City Road in Damascus to several people at risk of their homes being swept away by floodwaters and one person was reported trapped in their home was. The only way in or out of the area was over a bridge.

Upon arrival, the team used a boat to rescue the trapped person. Meanwhile, two local sheriff’s deputies went door to door advising residents to evacuate because of rising water.

A large shipping container crashed into the bridge and became wedged underneath. Due to the fog, a request for air support to help the team find a safer route out of the flooded area was rejected.

As they crossed the bridge, a large log became wedged on the right side of the bridge in a position that could have injured or killed one of the occupants, according to the Arlington County Fire Department.

As seen in the video, crews exited the vehicle and were considering what to do when the log momentarily moved. The emergency services then quickly decided to drive through the area and get to safety.

This rescue was one of several that took place on Friday. As emergency responders rescued over 70 people across the state.
