MLB Results: Brewers 6, Mets 0 – Mets blanked for third straight loss

The Mets’ offense put on a Tom Glavine-like performance and didn’t appear as if their season was hanging in the balance in the team’s 6-0 loss to the Brewers.

For the third game in a row it looked like the team was pressing, which led to their third defeat in a row. While this team looked great against the Phillies with their high confidence, they are now a team defeating themselves and repeating the mistakes of every doomed September team before them.

José Quintana got the start and looked very good. He performed much better than Luis Severino and Sean Manaea before him, but he couldn’t keep the Brewers off the field. He loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth and gave up a hit to Milwaukee’s eighth batter Joey Ortiz, who had two hits. His night ended with one out in the fifth after he gave up a leadoff double and a bunt. He struck out nine and walked two. He looked good for the most part and had a solid pitching performance, but it honestly didn’t matter as the offense failed to get its act together.

The Mets managed to put runners in scoring position, but left them stranded. Harrison Bader was the big culprit when he struck out the third to end the second inning with Pete Alonso on second and when he struck out with one out and Marte on the third in the fifth inning.

From there, the offense didn’t bother to put up much of a fight, even as their playoff hopes began to fade. Whatever hope remained after the 2-0 deficit left the building when Reed Garrett and Danny Young made it 6-0 in the eighth period.

While the bullpen epically imploded to put the game out of reach, this game was on offense. Given the way this team plays, it was already two runs. After Martes’ double in the fifth, they didn’t get another baserunner until Jose Iglesias got one out in the ninth. Ultimately, they were only able to score two goals and struck eleven times. They haven’t done it yet, but they’ve made it harder for themselves and if they keep playing like that in the remaining games, they’ll be staying at home in October.
