DeSHAUN FOSTER

introductory remarks

“The game didn’t go the way we wanted. But there were a few bright spots. In the second half we were able to run the ball a little better. I think my defense played pretty well tonight against an offense as strong as ours. We just didn’t really execute what we wanted to on offense to help our defense. We’ve been putting them out there over and over again, and if you keep putting them out on the field, they wear down a little bit. But otherwise I’m just happy that my players kept fighting and there weren’t any people who gave up.”

that quarterback Ethan Garbers stays in the game despite some quarterback pressure

“Well, if you know Ethan, you know he fought to stay out there. So if you have a player who is begging to stay out there and he wants to keep playing, let him play.”

on some of the positives he can take with him as UCLA prepares to face Penn State next week

“Look at yourself with a positive question. We just have to go to Penn State and just keep building on it. That’s all we have to do. As I said, we will learn from these losses. I know I see it. I know you all see it, but some of you choose not to. But they’re improving and we’re just going to keep improving and keep working hard. And at some point there will be a turning point.”

about quarterback Ethan Garbers, who has thrown six interceptions and three touchdowns this season

“The guys at the front have to protect him and prevent him from getting hit and from falling to the ground. It’s hard to play quarterback if you don’t stand tall. He’s a tough kid. He’s trying to find ways to make plays. It’s just unfortunate what’s happening, but I’m going with Ethan no matter what.”

on the team’s defense against Oregon

“The defense played well. But we didn’t do enough offensively to help them. And like I said, with such a strong offense, they’re going to be able to make some plays. I’m just glad my guys keep fighting on defense. They’re some resilient guys.”

on the fact that the Bruins defense had no sacks in the last three games

“We were under a little pressure there. Cherif (Seye) came in there and tipped a ball. But you know, when you have a first-rounder from last season, there’s going to be a glaring difference. He (Laiatu Latu) still does the exact same thing for the Colts. Replacing a player of his caliber is a difficult thing. As long as we can put in the effort, that will change eventually.”

about linebacker Carson Schwesinger, who finished as the team’s leading tackler

“He just plays with a certain mentality. He is a former reserve player, so such players are usually real workers. You probably didn’t realize this, but he’s been injured for most of this season so far. And he’s still out there making plays. He plays hard no matter what. I’m just glad he’s on our side.”

about his team’s current mindset

“I mean, they should be down. No one should be upset about what happened. The fact that they’re still out there playing, it’s a little bit one-sided with the result, and they’re still out there playing hard, it just shows their character. We have some good guys. At some point that will change.”
