Why is Moo Deng so popular right now? This “Bouncy Meatball” has a live stream and merch

Every now and then, an unusual and adorable animal captures the hearts of Internet users and becomes a viral star. Remember April the giraffe, who gave birth to her baby via live webcam in 2017? (RIP, sweet mama – April 2021 is over.) Now it’s Moo Deng’s turn to seduce the world. Moo Deng, a baby pygmy hippo, delights the world from her home in a Thai zoo.

Here’s what you should know about this chubby cutie.

Who is Moo Deng and how did she go viral?

Moo Deng is a female pygmy hippopotamus born in July at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chon Buri, Thailand. Moo Deng is the seventh baby born at the zoo to her 25-year-old mother Jona and 24-year-old father Tony, reports the Independent. Pygmy hippos can live up to 50 years, but are an endangered species with only 2,000 to 2,500 adults left.

The Times reports that while zookeeper Atthapon Nundee immediately began sharing Moo Deng on social media, the attached video now has more than 2.6 million views. The zoo conducted a Facebook poll to determine her name.

BuzzFeed even has a Moo Deng AI image generator that puts them in all sorts of situations, like the presidency or eating a Dole Whip at Disney World.
