Colorado’s Travis Hunter strikes a Heisman pose after an interception against UCF

Travis Hunter has spent the first five games of Colorado’s season making a compelling, if early, case for the 2024 Heisman Trophy.

This weekend he took that argument to the public.

With his team leading 34-14 against UCF on Saturday, Hunter got a jumping interception from Knights quarterback KJ Jefferson. After the game ended, Hunter ran into the end zone and struck the Heisman pose.

Given what he’s done for the Buffaloes this season, he has every reason to believe he deserves college football’s most prestigious individual award.

As a wide receiver/defensive back, Hunter is the rare two-way player in modern college football, a feat that’s especially impressive considering his team plays home games a mile above sea level and he’s playing in Orlando on Saturday 80% humidity playing against UCF.

While he played the overwhelming majority of Colorado’s snaps, Hunter came into the game against the Knights with 37 catches for 472 yards and five touchdowns on offense, as well as 14 tackles, two pass breakups and one interception on defense. He leads the team in receiving yards, touchdown catches and interceptions.

He had one of his best performances of the season against UCF.

Entering the fourth quarter, the 6-foot-3 junior, who began his college career at Jackson State University before following coach Deion Sanders to Colorado after the 2022 season, had nine catches for 89 yards and a touchdown, as well as an interception and finish a pass.

With a win against UCF, the Buffaloes would match their win total from the 2023 season, when they finished 4-8.
