China’s foreign minister warns of an “escalation” of the war between Ukraine and Russia

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned on September 28 against an escalation of the war in Ukraine, amid accusations from Kiev that Beijing was supporting Russia. Kiev expressed skepticism about Beijing’s calls for negotiations, but Wang reiterated China’s willingness to help broker a solution.

“The top priority is to commit to no expansion of the battlefield, no escalation of fighting and no provocation by any party and to push for a de-escalation of the situation as quickly as possible,” he told Agence France during the UN General Assembly -Press.

“China is committed to playing a constructive role, engaging in shuttle mediations and promoting peace talks without adding fuel to the fire or exploiting the situation for selfish purposes.”

China’s support of the Russian defense industry has been instrumental in changing the battlefield dynamics in Ukraine in Moscow’s favor.
