MLB playoffs rocked by Hurricane Helene

play

Major League Baseball announced Wednesday that the final two games of the critical New York Mets vs. Braves series in Atlanta will be postponed due to the approach of Hurricane Helene and will be played in a doubleheader next Monday – the day after the end of the regular season .

The league’s decision completely upends the National League playoff race, which began Wednesday with the Mets holding a one-game lead and the Arizona Diamondbacks a half-game ahead of the Braves, who were on the outside looking in .

Now the Mets and Braves have two potentially decisive games to play just one day before the start of the Wild Card Series. That likely leaves most of the potential NL playoff field in a holding pattern until the doubleheader ends.

The Mets and Braves had a scheduled rest day last Monday before the first game of the three-game series, and the Atlanta area was always expected to be affected by Hurricane Helene, making Wednesday’s decision even more so for the teams involved made it more frustrating.

Asked if he was surprised at how long it took in the MLB to make a decision, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters: “My job is to manage the team. We knew there was weather, but you can’t predict it.”

The storm reached hurricane status on Wednesday and is forecast to make landfall in Florida on Thursday, putting much of the Southeast under a hurricane warning.

The Braves will host the Kansas City Royals, battling for an AL wild-card spot, Friday through Sunday, while the Mets travel to Milwaukee for three games before Monday’s rescheduled doubleheader.

“I hope the Royals get it done,” Braves manager Brian Snitker told reporters. “I would hope we don’t screw up anything on their show.”

If the Diamondbacks are mathematically eliminated by the end of the weekend and only wild card seeds remain to be decided between the Mets and Braves, the status of the doubleheader will be at the discretion of commissioner Rob Manfred.
