Kentucky upsets Mississippi with Mark Stoops bets

OXFORD, Miss. – Mark Stoops pushed all of his chips into the middle of the table for Kentucky. Then Brock Vandagriff went bankrupt. Barion Brown found the right thing. And Josh Kattus, in the right place at the right time, ensured that the risky decision was not in vain.

Vandagriff’s 63-yard completion to Brown on fourth-and-7 at the Kentucky 20-yard line provided a game-winning score, which was sealed by Kattus’ fumble recovery in the end zone.

The roll of the dice paid off in arguably the most significant win of Stoops’ 12-year tenure, as Kentucky defeated No. 5 Mississippi 20-17 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

Kentucky’s attempt to clinch victory in the fourth round on Saturday – late in a close conference game – was in direct contrast to its loss to Georgia earlier this month. In that game, which was a 13-12 loss, Stoops punted on fourth-and-8 with less than three minutes to play. The Bulldogs then faded for most of the remaining time to escape with a point win in Lexington.

Even after the late touchdown, the Wildcats needed some luck. Mississippi ran to the Kentucky 31 before Caden Davis missed a potential tying field goal from 48 yards to left.

Kentucky now heads into the first opener of the season with confidence and a winning record. The Wildcats’ next game is October 12th at home against Vanderbilt.
