During Herbert Hoover’s four-year term in office, the country suffered from the Great Depression, but his humanitarian efforts are remembered.

Herbert Hoover was the 31st President of the United States. He was known as “the Great Humanitarian,” especially for his work during World War I and in the years following his presidency.

Hoover was born on August 10, 1874, in West Branch, Iowa. After the death of both his parents, Hoover was orphaned at the age of nine. At the age of eleven, he moved to Oregon.

Hoover attended Stanford University as a freshman and met his wife Lou there. They married on February 10, 1899, and flew to China the next day.

WHAT SHOULD AMERICA DO WITH OUR FORMER PRESIDENTS AFTER THEY LEAVE THE WHITE HOUSE?

While he was living and working in China, the Boxer Rebellion occurred in June 1900. His wife was working in hospitals at the time while Hoover helped build barricades.

When World War I began in Europe, Hoover was living in London. During that time, he helped 120,000 Americans return to the United States, the source said.

According to the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum, Hoover also headed the Relief Commission for Belgium, which provided food to the Belgian civilian population.

Hoover then became head of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration under President Woodrow Wilson. He also served as Secretary of Commerce under the administrations of President Warren Harding and President Calvin Coolidge.

Hoover himself was nominated by the Republicans and served as the 31st President of the United States from 1929 to 1933. The same year he took office, the Great Depression began, which lasted throughout his presidency.

While his years in the White House are associated with the Great Depression, he continued to be active in politics in the years after leaving the presidency, including serving on commissions under President Harry Truman and President Dwight Eisenhower.

In addition, he devoted much of his post-presidency time to writing books, including three memoirs about his early life, his time in office, and the Great Depression.

Hoover died on October 20, 1964.
