Mark Stoops on officiating against Ole Miss: ‘It’s a personal problem for us’

Through a quarter against Ole Miss, Kentucky trainer Mark Stoops obviously had problems with the administration. He was vocal about his thoughts on the sidelines, saying it was “personal” during an in-game interview.

ABC’s Molly McGrath Stoops asked the officials before the second quarter, when Kentucky trailed 7-3. He didn’t go into details and decided to keep the matter between himself and the referees, but said it was a “personal issue.”

“It’s between us and them,” Stoops told McGrath on Saturday’s show. “It’s a personal problem for us.”

Over the course of a quarter, Ole Miss had five penalties for 28 yards while Kentucky wasn’t picked off at all. But Stoops was particularly vocal early in the first quarter when UK was ruled offside – a penalty that Ole Miss declined – as an ABC analyst Greg McElroy thought the rebels were not properly positioned on the offensive. He also had some words between quarters.

Kentucky’s defense faced a big test against Ole Miss’ potent offense. Through four games, the Rebels lead the nation with 670.8 yards per game. But the Wildcats held strong early on, keeping Ole Miss out of the end zone after the first drive.

Mark Stoops said the defensive front is key. However, he added that finishing drives is what matters and he wants them to improve as the game goes on.

“The defense plays pretty well when we’re ready when we need to,” Stoops said. “If we had time to finish it, we have to do it. But they were disruptive.”

Kentucky started Saturday with some momentum after a rebounding 41-6 win Ohio last week. The Wildcats dominated on all sides in this game and were able to shake off the 13:12 defeat Georgia a week earlier at Kroger Field.

However, UK went into the game against Ole Miss without a player Maxwell Hairston. He had a pick-six last week but won’t play in Week 5 because of a bye week coming up.
