Team USA wins the four-ball session on Saturday morning

MONTREAL — As the fog finally lifted at the Royal Montreal Golf Club on Saturday morning, so did the metaphorical lid on the hole for the U.S. side.

US captain Jim Furyk sent out two of his top horses in the first game and Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa delivered the full point, winning 2 and 1 over Adam Scott and Taylor Pendrith.

“I think the captain gave me and Collin some confidence to go out and get a point and it wasn’t pretty today but we did what we had to do to get the point and that’s the most important thing.” said Scheffler.

The USA won three of the four four-ball games and took an 8-6 lead. The USA still needs seven points to retain the trophy.

On a cool morning when play was interrupted for an hour and 37 minutes due to fog, Scheffler needed a little longer to warm up. The world number 1 didn’t manage a single birdie in the first 15 holes. But he pushed his approach to within 10 feet at 16, completed the putt to give US 1 the lead, and drilled a putt from the front edge to seal the 2-1 victory.

“I got a little impatient out there and I’m standing there on 15 green and I’m like, ‘What do I do?'” Scheffler said. “I was able to make a few birdies when my partner needed me because he was out there alone for a while today, so I was proud to be able to step in when needed.”

In the second game, Americans Tony Finau and Xander Schauffele defeated the Canadian team of Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes 3 and 2. The Americans birdied No. 9 and took a 2-up lead at the turn. The Canadians halved the deficit with a birdie at 11, but Conners missed a short putt at 12, losing the hole and momentum. Schauffele, who has won two majors this year, said his team is hungry to shake off the taste of defeat on Friday.

“You’ve heard me talk about having a dog in you at individual events. When I look around my team room, I see a lot of dogs. We have proven that so far,” he said.

The only bright spot for the Internationals in the morning was South Korean duo Si Woo Kim and Tom Kim, who beat Keegan Bradley and Wyndham Clark 4 and 3. The Internationals won the first two holes and never looked back. Tom Kim was the emotional leader, pumping up the crowd with his punches. When he made his fifth birdie of the day on No. 14, Kim erupted in celebration and chest-thumped Si Woo Kim.

“Our chemistry is really good and we just bonded,” said Tom Kim about their team effort to get the only point for the international team.

In the final game, Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns defeated Sungjae Im and Hideki Matsuyama 2 and 1. Burns made birdies on Nos. 6 and 8 to give the U.S. the lead, and then Cantlay came to life on defense and made the eagle to the Ball Win the 12th hole and make three straight birdies from No. 14 to ensure there is no Internationals comeback.

It was an impressive comeback performance by the heavily favored US team, which was beaten 0-5 in foursomes on Friday.

“Yesterday was yesterday,” Morikawa said. “It’s not that we’ve never played bad golf and it’s not that we’ve never lost.”

Four more points are on the table for the foursome this afternoon. The first game of the afternoon begins at 2:20 p.m. ET. International team captain Mike Weir sent out the same four teams in the afternoon with Min Woo Lee, Jason Day, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Ben A, while the USA fielded Keegan Bradley, Wyndham Clark, Tony Finau and Sahith Theegala taking part in both Meetings attended Saturday.
