What happened?

As kick-off began, Manchester City were defeated by Newcastle in a thrilling game at St James’ Park. An Anthony Gordon penalty canceled out Joško Gvardiol’s opener, leaving Pep Guardiola’s side winless in their last two games.

That left Arsenal to capitalize on those lost points and they almost failed to capitalize when a brace from Leicester’s James Justin leveled the score at the Emirates. But the drama wasn’t over yet as four minutes into stoppage time, a Wilfred Ndidi own goal gave the Gunners a dramatic lead, and Kai Havertz added another before the final whistle.

Chelsea also kept the pace going despite some suspect defending as four first-half goals from Cole Palmer were enough to beat Brighton 4-2.

After two sensational defeats, Everton finally got their first win of the season, a brace from Dwight McNeil bringing them back from behind in the home game against Crystal Palace.

Fulham climbed to sixth place with a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest thanks to a goal from Raúl Jiménez and another record-breaking fast start from Brentford eventually saw them pegged back by West Ham.

At kick-off in the evening, Liverpool secured top spot with their win over Wolves, even if Arne Slot’s team were not at their best that evening.

Player of the day

Cole Palmer lit up Stamford Bridge by becoming the first player in Premier League history to score four goals in the first half of the game.

It took him ten minutes to score his hat-trick. And after 19 minutes and 44 seconds he had his fourth. You may have wondered what took him so long?

Jokes aside, Palmer is Chelsea’s undisputed star and has had more goal involvements than appearances since joining from Manchester City in 2023.

The 22-year-old’s rapid rise to become one of the best players in the Premier League is simply astonishing.

No Chelsea player has ever scored more than three hat-tricks in the club’s history. It won’t be long before Palmer breaks through that barrier too.

Statistics of the day

Cole Palmer wasn’t the only one to break Premier League records as Brentford scored again in the first minute, this time for Bryan Mbeumo against West Ham.

That goal, scored after just 37 seconds, meant the Bees became the first team in league history to score in the first minute in three consecutive games.

In fact, 37 seconds seemed quite late compared to 22 seconds against Manchester City and 23 seconds against Tottenham last week.

Brentford fans had better get there early in future to ensure they don’t miss a moment.

What that means

Things are tight at the top, with Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea just two points apart after six games played.

Aston Villa are also in the mix and could join Liverpool at the top with a win over Ipswich Town on Saturday.

With their win over Nottingham Forest, Fulham are surprisingly in the top six, as Marco Silva has ensured three wins and two draws in their first six games.

At the bottom of the table, Everton have eased their worries somewhat as they move up to 15th with a win, but Crystal Palace are also in trouble with this result.

What they said

Man City boss Pep Guardiola was quick to praise his midfield, which had strengthened in Rodri’s absence. “They played really well; Mateo (KovaÄŤić) was brilliant, Rico (Lewis) too and Bernardo (Silva) when he played in that position. They played really well!”

Now title rival Mikel Arteta admitted he was worried when Leicester leveled the scores. “Given the amount of goals we should have scored, it was emotionally difficult to accept,” the Spaniard told reporters. “It was worrying. Theoretically we should never have gotten to this point – but that’s football. That’s the beauty of football compared to other sports.”

And Fabian Hürzeler was full of praise for Cole Palmer, despite the damage the Englishman had done to his team. “Cole Palmer is special,” said the Brighton boss. “He’s unstoppable, there aren’t that many players like him.”

What’s next?

On Sunday Aston Villa travel to Ipswich, while the later opener at Old Trafford is big as Manchester United host Tottenham.
