Series A | Genoa – Juventus 0:3: Vlahovic’s brace breaks the dry spell

Dusan Vlahovic ended Juventus’ drought after more than five hours as his brace and Francisco Conceicao added to Genoa’s woes late on in an empty Marassi.

This game was played behind closed doors after violent clashes broke out between Genoa and Sampdoria fans during the midweek Coppa Italia match, which saw the Grifone eliminated on penalties. VAR technology was available despite a small fire in the cabin a few hours earlier.

The Bianconeri were frustrated after three consecutive 0-0 draws but lost Tim Weah and Arkadiusz Milik to injury, allowing Danilo and 20-year-old Jonas Rouhi to make their first starts of the season. Ruslan Malinovskyi is out for the season after the horrific ankle fracture and sits on the treatment table alongside Junior Messias, Brooke Norton-Cuffy and Caleb Ekuban, leaving 16-year-old Honest Ahanor making his senior debut.

Fabio Miretti faced his parent club and his free-kick bounced off the wall, while Ahanor almost surprised Danilo by sneaking behind him on a cross.

There was another setback for Genoa when captain Milan Badelj limped off with a left thigh injury after just 25 minutes.

Morten Frendrup was booked for catching Nico Gonzalez on the ankle, but that wasn’t a red card because he hit the ball first.

Dusan Vlahovic’s free kick flew over the crossbar and no one was ready for Kenan Yildiz’s retreat from the baseline.

Juventus’ first real chance came just before half-time when a deflected cross from Nico Gonzalez hit the gloves of Pierluigi Gollini at the near post.

Immediately after the restart, Koni De Winter clumsily blocked a Yildiz shot in the penalty area and Vlahovic converted the penalty by firing his left foot into the top corner after a stuttering run-up. It was their first goal in over five hours of Serie A football.

Shortly afterwards it was almost 2-0 when Koopmeiners pulled the ball back across the six-yard box, but Ahanor intercepted the ball decisively to prevent Nico Gonzalez’s throw-in.

Vlahovic scored Juve’s second goal when he ran with the ball to the Koopmeiners, deflected Mattia Bani and fired a left-footed shot into the bottom corner.

Francisco Conceicao made his comeback from injury and prepared an assist on a silver platter which Koopmeiners incredibly smashed into the underside of the crossbar from close range.

Vlahovic was also denied with a wayward header on the close-range pullback, with Genoa only threatening late on when the shot deflected off Bohinen.

Mattia Perin had to make a real flying save from Andrea Pinamonti, who shot in from the left after Alan Matturro pulled back.

Shortly afterwards, however, Juventus scored their third goal when Khephren Thuram’s pass was let through by a clever Koopmeiners dummy and Francisco Conceicao was able to shoot into the goal from just outside the penalty area.
